Dance Video

hawaii small.jpg

I'm on vacation in Hawaii having a snorkle-tastic time with Andrea and the kids. Since I've been gone my evil twin Allen "I got no hobbies" Coleman made this fancy dance video of Omar and I. I thought I'd pass it along for your viewing enjoyment...

GeeTar

Guitar_2.jpg

Tonight was fun. Omar and I and another guitar player friend spent and hour and a half learning a bunch of old rock songs and then went to Finn's in Santa Cruz and played music for the patrons for 2 hours. The highlight was the last 30 minutes of music which we didn't learn or practise until we turned the page and started playing them live for the first time - great fun! People enjoyed the music and that's always a joy.

It was really fun to get out and play for people again - we played songs by John Mayer - Elton John - Switchfoot - Men at Work - Brian Adams - Omar - Tom Petty - The Beatles - Billy Joel - Chris Tomlin - The Police - Kenny Loggins - Otis Redding - Steve Miller - Les Emmerson and John Mellencamp.

Omar and I have had a vision to be out playing music around town to become a part of the local music community. We need to be outside the 4 walls of the church campus to Incarnate and be part of Santa Cruz if we ever hope to reach people who are not followers of Jesus. How can YOU incarnate into YOUR community in greater ways?

Was Jesus God or Just a Prophet?

mod christ sky.JPG

Was Jesus God? That's a question that is still bouncing around after a couple of thousand years. If He was it meant everything, if He wasn't all Christians are heretics worshipping a mere man and not God... which... would... be... a BIG PROBLEM. Here are some brief thoughts from a book called Great Doctrines of the Bible. You may want to print this out if you're going to read it so you still have usable eyesight after your study. Here's to studying it out for yourself friends - cheers!

Charles Spurgeon and Cigars

cigar.gif

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. He was a brilliant speaker, a man with a deep conservative understanding of Scripture and a Baptist. He was also a big-time cigar smoker - notice the burning sungrown figurado in his hand in the picture above. Read all about it at this link... Spurgeon and Cigars

My favorite part of this webpage is the final letter at the bottom of the page from a man named W. M. Hutchings, penned October, 1874 - proving things never change...nothing is new under the big glowing orb in the sky.

27 Years of Marriage

Today Andrea and I celebrate 27 of marriage. Not the mere survival of the species; a thriving growing friendship and big love affair. Ahhhh bliss. It CAN be done. I love my wife.

Notes of Thanks

Last Sunday we celebrated Elevation's 6 month anniversary as a ministry. During our worship time we asked folks to write notes of encouragement to our Elder Board for having the courage to launch Elevation during a very difficult economic season in our church. Below are the notes they wrote - very encouraging and humbling!

Riffworks

Riffworks now offers a free online music collaboration tool that you should check out

Guitar_Twirl_by_tanya_n.jpg

Here's the official marketing jive : "Create, Collab, Cast: RiffWorks T4 -RiffWorks T4 is a free edition of RiffWorks guitar recording software that includes looped recording, automatic track creation, InstantDrummer, effects, song posting, online collaboration, and a “Quick Start” tutorial in 14 languages."

Now worship leaders can work with their bands to write songs and exchange musical ideas free globally; gotta love that internet thing...

On the iPod: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Baby 81 - check this Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Video out-and this video too. To listen correctly this music needs to be played hellishly loud. Note: not all songs may suitable for all listeners so some track deletions may be necessary for some listeners...then set your car stereo volume to stun and break the speed limit while screaming the lyrics outloud.

It Can Be Done

c80cb6b82f3d582271f56d666e4cfd52.jpg

Worshipfacilities.com tends to focus on mega-church meeting spaces BUT there's something extra cool on their site right now - Las Vegas' Grace Point (a portable) Church.

Volunteers can do amazing things, check out what Grace Point Church's unpaid staff does every week in a rented school building. To see the Grace Point video: follow this Link, look for media and hit "Grace Point". Never underestimate what people can do without a building of their own, without a giant paid techstaff, and without fear!

Crispy Flesh Cookie

This is what you get when your 17 year old daughter "warms up" a big 1" thick steak in the microwave for 10 minutes. A ultra-flat crispy flesh cookie... and a house that smells like the alley behind a Texas smoke house.

Pastors At Play AGAIN

Ahhhh another glorious day away on Harleys! Saturday morning Omar and I got on our bikes, loaded up our wives and headed out to the 61st Annual Hollister Motorcycle Rally. This is what gentlemen pastor types look like on a day away.

chuckk n omar at hollister 2008.jpg

At one point we were walking down the road and I heard someone shouting over a bullhorn. It was these fellows...

turn or burn.jpg

As they shouted to the crowd about God's love (and a really hot Hell) Omar and I began to ask onlookers what they were experiencing. One guy said he wished they'd stop and that "people knew where to find it if people want it", a Christian lady mentioned how it seemed condemning, some yelled "shut up", a few mocked them. I spoke to a guy from the Hells Angel's motorcycle club who just seemed baffled by it - he wasn't the only one, several people looked really confused by the message. The only person who said it was good was a youth pastor I spoke with who said "you've got to be bold" tersely. I ran into some Christian friends of mine at one point and they said "you aren't here with these guys are you?" (yes, when pigs fly).

Overall it tasted pretty bitter on the palate of almost every Homo Sapien within earshot. I'll bet these guys really feel like they are doing the loving thing deep down inside. I kept thinking how much more powerful their "ministry to bikers" would have been if they had stayed home and helped their neighbor fix their motorcycle as an act of love and a bridge of ongoing friendship. It is possible to use the Gospel to negate the Gospel. Incarnation doesn't usually require a bullhorn.

The 21 Absent Grams in your MacBook Pro

db.jpg

Some say that when you die you instantly lose 21 grams of weight, presumably it's your soul... I'm not so convinced. I just read an interesting blog entry by David Byrne the uber-gifted 21 grams behind the band, Talking Heads. In the blog he muses about art, machines and the soul. Here's a thought on the 21 grams of soul theory ... The eternal spiritual element of us is the IMmaterial part of the us and since it is not matter would possess no material wieght...

God is

If God had a Facebook page the status would read " God is". Some yahoo gave this Ravi Zacharias' clip about God's existence a combatant title (why do so many evangelicals always seem on the attack?) it's a cool video clip about God's is-ness.

Californians Love Religion... Not So Much

Here's an interesting survey about Californians and religion.

Our Lady Of The Bloody Road Rash?

When you fall off a moving motorcycle the tarmac loves to lick the skin off your carcass ravenously, the aftermath is called road rash. Maybe if your religious enough the Blessed Virgin will swing by as you leave your bike for the horizontal journey and save your butt... or maybe not...

Shazam!?

Truth be told I'm not a huge fan of the flaccid children's picture book depictions of Jesus. The late 20th century pop art version of my Great King can be, well, lame. He's either painted as a gentle lamb-carrying pre-hippie or a comic-book superhero with abs o' steel. Jesus is never painted more Disneylicious than when a picture replays one of His world-rocking, mind-bending miracles. The miracles of Jesus deserve closer examination so for our next series at Elevation we're going to dive into the deep NT narrative.

When Jesus breaks the bounds of the natural He leaves powerful insights into who He is and what He is like.

Church Planters: GOOD Children's Ministry Music That Doesn't Suck So Much...

It's hard to find appropriate music for postmodern children's ministry. But given this new Cd and a bottle of Nyquil for each child your postmodern kid's ministry will be a big success. ht: Phil McKenna

Green Sound

green blog pic small.jpg

We NOW have the first 2 weeks of the Green series podcasts up on the Elevation website in case you were looking for them. Sorry for the delay.

Green has been a fun and interesting journey: week one I created a live soundscape with audio loops as I taught (which is a handful), I've had to really wrestle with my own lack of Greeness, the ElevationEnvironmentCrew (atmosphere team) made the room look amazing, and the topic has been way more controversial than I expected.

Poster Boy?

I ran into this article online recently and had to laugh at how the author described me. And here I thought I was the poster boy face of conventional Republican Evangelical ultra right wing Bible-belt pastors... Shocking.

Visual Series Rewinds

E icon green fuzz_2.jpg

Something we've been doing at Elevation that may be worth passing on is Visual Series Rewinds. Like many teams we spend mega-hours each month putting together Keynote visuals for each week's message. We use photo stills, animations, video clips, audio clips and series color branded backgrounds to help our visual learners connect more deeply with Jesus and the teaching. After all that work it's a shame to just file it away like all the cool treasures in the Area 51 warehouse (and yes, I LIKED the new Indiana Jones).

We do this: at the end of each series we take all the best "slides" from all the messages in that series and put them into a single presentation set it to music and play it at the end of the last message in the series. The idea is to help people recall and reconnect the messages in the series as one piece instead of just a bunch of individual thoughts.

Whoo Hoo! -Tonight we start our new series: GREEN.

Logos For Mac

Logos.jpg

God news for Mac-types Logos Bible Software has a free alpha version of its software for download that will function on Macs. If you have a logos library of books this means you can now access them from your Mac. Even though I run the full Windows version via Fusion on my MacBook Pro it is nice to have the Mac version for a quick startup quick look at my books even though all the features aren't in place on the Mac version yet. If you don't have a PC copy of Logos and its library of books you'll have to wait for the full release of the Mac version of Logos coming... well sometime. All I can say is that I started using Logos many many years ago on PCs and it has revolutionized the depth of my study of God's Word and quickened it at the same time. I can't say enough good things about Logos. Logos is like the Cuban Montecristo #2 of Bible software - it's smokes nicely!
